Traditional sashiko is a simple running stitch that was originally used in rural Japan to strengthen cloth. The origins of it are lost in the mists of time. It was born out of necessity and has since evolved into an art form with many different designs and patterns delightful to the eye and senses.
Originally sashiko was used on thick indigo dyed cotton or many layers of thinner material but experiment and find out more about this intriquing stitch form with these wonderful cotton threads. Want to do something non traditional? Stitch with them on your jeans! It looks amazing.
You'll find that each skein is folded. Find the spot where it is tied together and cut all the threads on the skein at this point. You'll get an equal number of long threads. They'll seem very long but don't cut them further - sashiko skeins are made to just the right length for using the thread. Hold the end of the skein and loosely plait the threads to keep them tidy. Draw out each thread as you need it.
Happy creating!
